Peria mama (Shri P K Hariharan) passed away on 19.10.2005 !!!

I have got a sad news to share with you all!

The papanasam mama affectionately known as Periamama passed away on 19th October 2005 at Papanasam. He must be more than 95. Thegreat old man of the yester generation has said goodbye to all of us.

Let me cherish some of his remembrances !

He was the first man to intoduce radio to the house and he was living like a king at Ammapettai. And periamami had more than 100 sovereign of gold at that time. They used to go to theater in horse driven cart.(hearsay from amma)

But later he literally became a pauper. All the moneyhe had borrowed went in drain. He also lost his 2 sons.But he had the spirit of resilience that kept him in good stead to bear all the agonies in life. He got his two daughters married off pretty well. He never went to anyone for any assistance all through his life. He was always a giver and had immense faith in our heritage. People in the family used to call hin 'Dharumar' -the Yudhistrar of pandavas. A truly fitting name.

He worked in a hotel in Chennai for more than 25 years for a paltry sum. He never allowed any of his visitors go without taking food. Only when the health failed ,he took retirement at the age of 85.

He never bothered about his personal adversaries. He believed in destiny and lived like a saint. He used to warn people - ‘ please be careful in life’. He would often advise people not to borrow money at any cost. Very sincere in writing letters to all relatives and friends.He never envied anybody. All his sisters’ kids were doing extremely well whereas his own son was not doingwell; but he prayed for all and wished best of things for all.

A great man has departed ! Let his soul rest in peace!

Let God give strength to Raji, Viji and Kunjumani and to all of us.

He is P K Hariharan my maternal uncle - my periamama - mother's eldest brother

Babu writes:

What a true and fitting tribute to Periamama! Only when such messages are spoken do we all realize what we are missing today.

Every individual life is a history, and we learn from every history. We have a lot to learn from Periamama’s life. Life treats you apparently without consulting what you want. Money, health, children, prosperity, intellectual capacity are transient and any thing can change any time. But if we live a life such as Periamama who withstood all facets of life - without grumble and without jealous.

He is a true yogi- and hope we learn form his life.

The last doyen of the illustrious family has reached Siva padam.

Hope the next generation rise up and bring values to the family and to themselves!

Of late, I have started reading books on 'Self Development'. Many a number of books make me feel why ' I have not read the books earlier?'

Two such books are

SUPER SELF by CHARLES J GIVENS
and of course the world famous
THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE by STEPHEN COWAY

Both are superb books. Highly mesmerising.

The general principle behind these self development books are already available in our ancient meditation techniques. In fact I happened to listen to a meditation cassette by Dr Reddy, who was teaching the memory techniques under his own brancd name of Max Excel in Chennai. Dr Reddy was preaching about the 'Bahula Siddhi ' meditation , an interesting relaxation cum visulaisation technique based on Swami Sukhabodananda's teachings. Same principle is being eloborated in the above 2 books as well.

* Relax your body and mind
* Visualise
* Use bothe sides of your brain
* Affirm your acievement
* Feel as though you have attained what you wanted
* Repeat as many times as possible the mantra of re-affirmation,
"Every endeavour, I excel making my life enchanting, blissful and purposeful"

Thanks Dr Reddy, Mr Givens and Mr Coway..
You have enriched my thought processes.
